A Small Business Owner's Guide to Content Collection Gear
Monday, April 13, 2026
If you're a small business owner trying to film content, whether it's behind-the-scenes reels, product demos, or tutorial videos, the gear aisle can feel overwhelming fast. Ring lights, overhead mounts, gimbals, microphones...where do you even start?
I've tested a lot of it, so you don't have to! Here's the breakdown of my personal recommendations for those who are not professional content creators and just need something to get the job done easily!
Overhead Mounts (Great for Flat Lays, Cooking, Art & Craft Content)
If you film from above (think product photography, cooking demos, or craft tutorials ), you need a dedicated overhead setup. These mount directly to your desk and position your phone looking straight down.
UBeesize 12" Desk Ring Light with Overhead Mount$38. This is a solid all-in-one. The arm detaches, so you can also use it as a regular tripod and light combo, which makes it more versatile than it looks. Multiple brightness and color temperature settings give you good control over your look. The catch: setup and takedown every time you want to film gets old quickly. Best if you can leave it assembled!
Evershop 10" Overhead Ring Light$30. More reach than the UBeesize and great for getting that higher angle. It's versatile, but the arm can be hard to maneuver when you're trying to adjust angles. The mount is genuinely easy to set up. It's the repeated on/off that becomes a chore. Same caveat as above: leave it set up if you can!
My pick: The UBeesize wins for versatility since the removable arm gives you two setups in one. If you regularly film overhead content, it's worth the investment!

Desk Tripods with Lighting (Everyday Desktop Filming)
For straightforward talking-head content, Zoom-style videos, or anything filmed at desk level, these are my recommendations!
10.5" Desktop Ring Light with Simple Base$25. Clean, minimal, low “clutter.” Adjustable lighting and a straightforward design. The downside: it's not the sturdiest option, and some reviews have noted the light can dim or fail after a year or two. I personally haven't experienced that, but it is something to make note of! Good for getting started on a budget.
UBeesize 10" Selfie Ring Light with Tripod Stand$36. This one handles more versatile low angles because of the adjustable tripod legs, which is great if you film in different setups. The wider base footprint is a small downside if your desk space is limited, but the build quality and flexibility make it worth it for most people.
My pick: These are a tie for me. Personally, I picked the simple base because it didn't clutter my desktop. But the UBeesize 10" is reliable and flexible, too. It comes down to your desktop and what you prefer space-wise.

Simple Desk Stands (No Light Needed)
If you already have good natural light or a separate lighting setup, you can skip the ring light and keep it simple.
COOPER ChatStand $15. This is genuinely one of my favorite finds. It's adjustable, compact, and gets out of the way. If lighting isn't your concern, this does exactly what you need. It's perfect for desktop filming, video calls, or any content where you already have your lighting sorted.
On-the-Go / Travel Tripod
TONEOF 68" Magnetic Selfie Stick Tripod$25. I have used a version of this that clips, and I think that the MagSafe magnetic holder is the game-changer on this one. No more tilting phone holders! It extends tall, folds down portable, and the rechargeable remote makes solo filming so much easier. Warning! The taller you extend it, the more it wobbles. For most filming situations, it's not an issue, and the portability makes up for it. Easy to grab and go!
Clip-On Lights (Budget-Friendly Add-On Lighting)
Sometimes you just need a little extra light without setting up all the things!
ALTSON 60 LED Portable Selfie Light $13. This is my preferred pick between the two 60 LED options I've tried. The light output feels stronger; it has 9 light modes, a 2200mAh rechargeable battery, and it has vertical and horizontal clip options. Some reviewers mention battery life isn't the longest, but for the price and the light quality, it's hard to beat, and I've loved it so far!
Newmowa 60 LED Fill Light$23 Another solid option that has done so much for me through many content shoots! It's very similar to the ALTSON but a little thinner.
Honestly, you can't go wrong with either. If both are available, I'd lean towards the ALTSON for brightness, and it is cheaper.
*Both need to be charged before using.
The Stationary Setup (For a Dedicated Content Space)
NEEWER 18" Ring Light Kit (RL-18)$112. This is my favorite ring light, no doubt. The size and light quality are awesome compared to the smaller desk options. The adjustable color temperature and brightness give you true control over your look. The downside is obvious: it's bulky and not something you move around. This one is for a dedicated filming spot. Whether that's a retail space, studio, office corner, or anywhere you can leave it set up permanently. If that's you, it's absolutely worth it.
*Needs a power source.
Microphone
Hollyland Lark M2 Wireless Microphone$99. The only mic I use and recommend. It's wireless, works with your phone or camera, has great noise cancellation, and the volume control that gives you flexibility during filming. The 1000ft range and 30-hour battery mean you don't have to worry about dropping sound randomly during filming. If you're serious about your content sounding as good, this is the upgrade that makes a big difference!
Gimbal / Stabilizer
DJI Osmo Mobile SE$55. If you film any kind of moving content (walking through your shop, behind-the-scenes, travel content), shaky footage will show itself in everything you're doing. This fixes that. It takes a little practice to get comfortable with it, but once you do, the difference is noticeable. Compact, foldable, and the ActiveTrack feature that keeps the camera on you is great if you want to set it up and move around. 100% recommend if you move while you film.
Final Recommendations If You:
Film mostly at your desk (talking head, demos, Zoom):UBeesize 10" Ring Light Tripod + Hollyland Lark M2
Film overhead content (products, cooking, art):UBeesize 12" Overhead Mount — leave it set up
Have a dedicated space and want the best setup:NEEWER 18" Ring Light + Hollyland Lark M2 + DJI Osmo Mobile SE (for any movement)
Are just starting and want to keep it simple and affordable: COOPER ChatStand + ALTSON Clip-On Light
Need something portable for content on the go or quick setup:TONEOF Magnetic Tripod + ALTSON Clip-On Light + Hollyland Lark M2
You don't need all of this. Start with what fits your filming style and add from there. The mic upgrade alone will make a noticeable difference faster than almost anything else on this list. If you don't want to invest in a mic, the built-in mic on the Apple wired earpods works great, too!
